A High School Almost-Love Story, Rewritten

More than twenty years ago, Melissa and James walked the same high school halls. Their paths never quite crossed back then, but life has a funny way of circling back to what’s meant to be.

In May of 2023, thanks to a nudge from Facebook, James noticed a familiar name pop up: Melissa. With 25 mutual friends and just enough curiosity, he reached out. What started as a simple message quickly became something neither of them expected — a second chance at a first love.

By June 2023, they were on their first date. From that moment forward, everything fell into place with the ease and certainty of a story that had simply been waiting for the right chapter.

A Sunrise Proposal at Letchworth State Park

For anyone who believes proposals are always a complete surprise — James might gently disagree.

Melissa works part-time at a jewelry store, so when a certain ring arrived, she suspected something special was coming. But James, determined to make it unforgettable (despite being famously terrible at keeping secrets), had a plan.

“You need to take this day off,” he told her.

“I’ll try,” she replied.

“No try, only do.”

And so, before dawn, they headed out for what Melissa believed was simply a hike. Dressed for adventure, she had no idea just how meaningful the morning would become.

There was a missed turn. A detour to the visitor center. A little nervous energy. And then — the falls.

At a breathtaking spot overlooking the pools of the waterfall, Melissa spotted a photographer waiting. In that moment, surrounded by mist and morning light, James gathered his courage. It may have been slightly awkward. It may have been beautifully unscripted. But it was absolutely perfect.

He asked.
She said yes.

The rest of the morning was filled with laughter, photos, and a celebratory breakfast — the first meal of their forever.

A Bee-Inspired Wedding at Max's at Eastman

Melissa and James carried that same joyful intentionality into their wedding day at Max's at Eastman in Rochester, New York.

The man, the myth, the shoes.

Their celebration was thoughtfully designed around a bee and insect theme — a sweet nod to community, loyalty, and hard work. From the favors to the smallest details, their vision was cohesive and playful. The groom even wore dragonfly-covered shoes — a detail guests are still talking about.

Their beloved dog, Daisy, stole hearts as the cutest ring bearer.

Behind the lens was talented photographer Eric Jackling, capturing every laugh, every tear, and every perfectly imperfect moment. The dance floor came alive thanks to DJ Steve Turner, who kept the celebration going well into the night.

A Love Story 20 Years in the Making

Melissa and James’ wedding was more than a beautiful event — it was proof that timing is everything. That sometimes love waits patiently. That missed hallways and missed turns can still lead exactly where you’re meant to be.

From a Facebook suggestion to a sunrise proposal at Letchworth, to a bee-themed celebration filled with personal touches, their story reminds us of something simple and powerful:

What’s meant for you will always find its way back.

And in their case, it only took twenty years.
