Everyone talks about summer weddings in Rochester. We'd like to make the case for winter.
Fresh snow on the trees. Nobody fighting you for the good photo spot. A ceremony that's just the two of you (and maybe a few favorite humans), followed by hot cocoa or a fancy dinner somewhere warm. Winter elopements are quiet, cozy, and ridiculously romantic, and Rochester has some seriously underrated spots for them.
We've officiated 500+ ceremonies since 2014, including plenty in the cold months. Here are our favorite places to elope in Rochester this winter, from glass-walled greenhouses to snowy lakeshore, plus what you need to know about permits, costs, and staying warm.
Cozy indoor spots (no frozen fingers required)
1. Lamberton Conservatory, Highland Park
Picture this: it's 20 degrees outside, and you're saying your vows surrounded by tropical plants and blooming flowers under a glass roof. The Lamberton Conservatory is basically a winter escape hatch, and it's one of the most magical elopement spots in Rochester when there's snow on the ground outside.
Good to know: You can reserve the conservatory through Monroe County Parks for up to 40 guests at $100 an hour. Your reserved time has to include setup and cleanup, so keep decor simple. Book online through the Monroe County Parks reservation system or call 585-753-7275.
2. George Eastman Museum
If you love old-world glamour, the historic Eastman mansion delivers. The museum hosts ceremonies in the mansion's Conservatory and Front Hall, which means grand staircases, rich wood, and serious winter-wonderland-meets-Gatsby energy.
Good to know: Ceremonies in the mansion can hold up to 120 guests, so it works for an elopement with a few loved ones. Pricing isn't posted, so reach out to the museum's events team through their wedding inquiry form.
3. Memorial Art Gallery
For the art-loving couple, MAG is a gorgeous indoor option. Its smaller parlors are perfect for an intimate ceremony: the Lynne Lovejoy Parlor holds 40 guests and the Bausch & Lomb Parlor holds 50.
Good to know: Pricing isn't posted online. Contact MAG's events team for availability and rates.
4. Your own cozy spot
Some of our favorite winter elopements happen somewhere personal: your living room, a cabin rental, or the house where one of you grew up. Fireplace, blankets, your dog in a bow tie. No permits, no time limits, and you can change into sweatpants right after.
Good to know: In New York, you can legally get married anywhere in the state, including your home, as long as you have your license and at least one witness.
Snowy outdoor spots (for the brave and the bundled)
5. Highland Park in the snow
Everyone knows Highland Park for lilacs in May. Fewer people know how stunning it looks blanketed in snow, with rolling hills, bare branches, and that quiet you only get after a fresh snowfall. Bonus: the Lamberton Conservatory is right there if you need to warm up.
Good to know: Monroe County Parks lets you reserve the Lilac Arches for ceremonies at $50 an hour. The Sunken Garden is available for photos only, at $100 an hour for up to 20 people. Call 585-753-7275 to check winter availability.
6. Durand Eastman Park
Lake Ontario in winter is something else: ice formations along the shore, steel-gray water, and a beach you'll have completely to yourselves. Durand Eastman also has wooded trails and hills that look like a snow globe after a storm.
Good to know: The park is owned by the City of Rochester and run by Monroe County Parks. Call Monroe County Parks at 585-753-7275 before you plan anything, and check that the road and paths you need are open in winter.
7. High Falls and the Pont de Rennes Bridge
For a city-meets-nature backdrop, it doesn't get more Rochester than this: a 96-foot waterfall right downtown, viewed from a pedestrian bridge over the Genesee. In winter, the mist and ice around the falls make for dramatic photos.
Good to know: The City of Rochester's permitting policy says private gatherings of 50 or fewer in outdoor park spaces don't need a permit. Confirm the High Falls area falls under that before your date, and plan for wind on the bridge.
8. Mendon Ponds Park
If you want snow-covered woods and frozen ponds without leaving Monroe County, Mendon Ponds is a dreamy pick. It's one of the largest parks in the area, so it's easy to find a quiet trail or overlook that feels miles from anywhere.
Good to know: Mendon Ponds is a Monroe County park. Call 585-753-7275 to ask about a small ceremony and whether you need a permit for your spot.
Tips for a Rochester winter elopement
Get your license early. New York has a 24-hour waiting period after your license is issued, and the license is good for 60 days. Winter storms can close offices, so don't leave it until the last minute. Our Wedding FAQ walks you through the whole process.
Bring a witness. New York requires at least one witness at your ceremony, even for an elopement. Your photographer can count.
Keep outdoor ceremonies short. Ten to fifteen minutes is the sweet spot when it's freezing. We'll write a ceremony that's personal and meaningful without anyone losing feeling in their toes.
Watch the sunset. Rochester sunsets come early in December, often before 5 pm. Plan your ceremony and photos for early afternoon so you're not racing the dark.
Have a Plan B. Lake-effect snow is real. Pick a backup indoor spot (or a car with the heat cranked) just in case.
Dress for it. Faux fur wraps, cute boots you can actually walk in, hand warmers tucked in pockets, and a blanket for photos. Warm and stylish are not mutually exclusive.
Plan the warm-up. Book a dinner reservation, a cozy bar, or a cabin with a fireplace for right after. It's the best part.
Ready to say "I do" in the snow?
Winter elopements might be small, but they deserve a ceremony that's every bit as personal as a 200-guest wedding. We'll write yours from scratch, file your marriage license, and show up in our warmest boots wherever you want to say "I do."
